Enjoy Halloween with these Safe, Fun, and Local Ideas

With fall's vibrant colors all around, Halloween is in the air! Although this year's festivities will be different due to COVID-19, here's a collection of safe, fun activities to enjoy across Kitsap County.   


Pumpkins, a Corn Maze, and Scarecrows Galore


A Pumpkin Patch with Farm Animals and a Corn Maze: Visit Pheasant Fields Farm to pick the perfect pumpkin and see the farm animals. Masks are required on the farm. The corn maze will still be there to explore (see prices below) but visitors must all go in the same direction so that groups can practice social distancing. This is a wonderful way to celebrate fall and enjoy some time outdoors.

Pumpkin Walk
: Now in its 27th year, the Pumpkin Walk is a local tradition. Visit Bainbridge Gardens and explore the Trail of Pumpkins. Enjoy hundreds of painted pumpkins and family-friendly Halloween scenes. Bring your own painted pumpkin and place it on the trail! Visit throughout the month of October to see new entries. This annual event won't feature a live music or a bounce house due to the pandemic, but you can still dress up in your Halloween costume and take pictures with the "Great Pumpkin". Share your photos on Instagram and use #PumpkinWalk2020. Masks are required.
When: The entire month of October, Monday - Saturday 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM; Sunday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Note: The
Bainbridge Island Boys and Girls Club has been the beneficiary of the Pumpkin Walk for years. The Club has remained open, providing a safe place for kids of essential workers. Donations are encouraged to support the Club.


Port Orchard Scarecrow Contest: Get creative with friends, family or colleagues by competing in Port Orchard's 4th annual Scarecrow Contest. Visit the Port Orchard Market to check out all of the entries. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Nov. 2, 2020. Check out the official rules and get started!

Festivities from the Comfort of Your Car


Haunted Hayride at Battle Point: Described as a "safe and spooky drive-thru for all ages", this event sounds like a fun time for kids and adults alike. Characters and scenes will come out of the shadows as you drive down pumpkin-lined paths.
When: Oct. 20, 21 and 22, 2020 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Where: Battle Point Park, Bainbridge Island
Cost: $20 per vehicle

Trunk-or-Treat Drive Thru the Decades: Enjoy a blast from the past as you drive through the decades. Trunks and tents will be decorated, showcasing elements of the 1940's all the way up to today. Kids can play an "I Spy" game along the way and designated staff with masks and gloves will be handing out candy while guests remain in their cars.
When: Oct. 31, 2020 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Locally Made Treats for Halloween Fun at Home


Looking for a safe alternative to trick-or-treating? Create a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt and hide clues that lead to a delicious prize. Or, hide little plastic spiders around the house and see who can collect the most. 

Here are some great local businesses with amazing Halloween treats:

Cookie Creations in Kingston has a wide range of festive sugar cookies and many other types like the s'more cookie, and gluten free chocolate crackle cookie.
Sweet Life Cakery in Kingston has a mouth-watering fall menu featuring desserts like salted caramel apple pie with streusel topping (regular or gluten free) and caramel apple pecan cupcakes with cream cheese icing and caramel drizzle.
Sluys Poulsbo Bakery has anything pumpkin your heart desires: pumpkin donuts, breads, pies and cupcakes.
Bon Bon on Bainbridge Island has many delicious fudge flavors including pumpkin. They also have nostalgic candies like Pop Rocks and Bottle Caps.
Monica's Waterfront Bakery & Cafe in Silverdale creates a wide range of delicious goodies including pumpkin cupcakes with spiced butter cream frosting and chocolate peanut butter tartlets.
McGavin's Bakery in Bremerton has Halloween-themed cake pops and pumpkin Danish pastries. You can also order Halloween cookie kits.

Talk to a doctor about options If you're new to the Pacific Northwest, consider talking to your doctor about other ways to help your body physically adapt to the winter weather and darkness that is unique to this area. They might recommend daily vitamin D supplements and a sun lamp . Sun lamps mimic natural light and can be effective for those with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Speak to your doctor before making any changes. Try boredom busters for kids Do you have kids who are starting to bounce off the walls or are (conversely) staying glued to their devices? Lean into seasonal sports Enjoying a winter sport can mean everything from watching it live to watching it on TV to participating in it. Living so close to the Olympic Mountains and Mount Rainier means various options for skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoeing, and more. In addition, for those looking to watch sports live in the winter, Seattle is home to many professional teams, as well as minor league and college teams. If you prefer to stay off the roads and in the comfort of your own home, invite a couple of friends over to watch a game together. Start a new hobby For many, the rainy days provide a little more time since there’s often less running around. You can use that extra time to pick up a new hobby. Perhaps you’d like to get on the sourdough bread bandwagon, pick up woodworking, or learn how to knit. Maybe you’ve never made a mosaic but want to give it a try. Be sure to check them out. Choose an indoor home project to complete Meanwhile, if you feel stuck at home and don’t feel like picking up a new hobby, then why not tidy up your home a bit? Since this is the time of year when you may find yourself at home more, think about doing something that will make it feel more inviting. Purge old clothes, household items, and toys no longer being used. Pick a room to reorganize or rearrange the furniture. Hang up the pictures that you’ve been meaning to get to, or re-paint your home office. Tackling and completing a home improvement project will create a great sense of accomplishment. Take the time to slow down On the other hand, many take rainy days as an opportunity to embrace a slower lifestyle. That could mean spending the day reading a book or finding a new series to binge-watch without feeling guilty. Perhaps you let yourself enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in the morning for a longer amount of time. Or, since it’s dark outside, go to bed earlier or sleep in on the weekends. Some call it wintering and fully accept the conditions of this season while remaining home. Embrace Scandinavian Hygge Concepts Faced with even worse weather challenges in the winter than those in the Pacific Northwest, many Scandinavian countries still top the world happiness charts. Candles, warm blankets and a favorite mug for hot drinks are just the tip of the iceberg to creating a life of hygge. Simply put something on the calendar you’re looking forward to and start making it happen. We know the rainy season isn't for everyone. Keep in mind that longer, sunnier days are on the horizon. In the meantime, take advantage of some of these ideas to make the next few weeks (and future winters) not just bearable but enjoyable.
