Delicious, New Restaurants in Kitsap

In case you missed our social media coverage on Windermere Sound Living, we’ve been highlighting great, new restaurants that have opened during the pandemic. We wanted to feature these 4 new restaurants all in one place so you can fully appreciate their stories and what they offer. Kitsap County is such a beautiful place to live, and these restaurants are wonderful additions to our community. Go try them out! You'll be glad you did.


Ono Poke Too in Kingston


Poke is a way of life in Hawaii, and Steven Ono brings his culture and a new fresh food option to Kingston through Ono Poke Too. Growing up on O’ahu, Steven would race home from school to meet his uncle’s fishing boat to help clean the catch of the day, and take it to auction. 


Open since March 2021, Ono has faced challenges, but it has been well-received by the community. Being embedded in the community is very important to the Ono Poke brand, and at the end of each day, any leftover food is shared with community groups via the employees, as EVERY dish is made fresh each morning. They also proudly offer discounts to military and first-responders.

Their sister restaurant in Edmonds has been open for five years and serves more than 100 lbs. of poke per day. 

Just a couple of blocks up from the Kingston Ferry Terminal, Ono Poke Too makes a delicious lunch or dinner spot. Check it out and enjoy!


Parlor Shop in Poulsbo


 

When the world opened back up in June 2020, Mike and Taylor were ready with their new restaurant: Parlor Shop in Poulsbo. Before opening, Mike and Taylor had been hard at work renovating and curating the space and pizza menu – complete with a full-service cocktail bar. Their hard work shows in the comfortable lounge atmosphere and elegant bar design.


Mike and Taylor hope to host a community space centered around great food, drink, and company. “Every single day is a new starting point, and we’re trying to fulfill what we had envisioned,” says Mike. For Taylor, who also boasts years of restaurant experience, “enthusiastic guests and repeat customers” is especially rewarding.

With live music, pies, and drinks flowing, the community atmosphere shines bright, a beacon for the future of this new addition to the vibrant Poulsbo restaurant scene. The Slab Pizza Co. in Suquamish



The Slab Pizza Company in Suquamish may be small, but it’s mighty. Originally, “the slab” was a large cement basketball court known as a hangout for local youth, and one of the “spots to be” for fireworks. Having lived in the area since the 1990s, owner Drew Bateman chose the name to pay homage to the part of town that had the same name when he was growing up.

The interior of the shop is painted in rainbow colors, not just “because rainbows are cool,” but to show support for the LGBTQIA+ community. Drew hopes the shop can be a welcoming place for anyone who is from an underrepresented demographic. Being in Suquamish and on Native land is really special. He is proud to be able to serve the community this way.


The Slab, which offers to-go only, opened in mid-June 2021, but the building was obtained in November of 2020. This is Drew’s second pizza restaurant. The first was Bene Pizza on Bainbridge Island. His background in restaurants began at Agate Pass Cafe, which was located across the street from the Slab, and he has been working with the same crew for almost a decade.  And, his daughter Chloe, who has been working with him in restaurants since she was 14, can often be found behind the counter. Order online or stop by for a slice and an interesting soda!


Yoko Yoko Ramen in Bremerton


Great ramen starts with a passion for authentic cultural traditions. James Johnson, the owner of Yoko Yoko Ramen, gained that from his time in Japan. While in the Navy, he was stationed there and attended the International Ramen School as a hobby, learning everything about ramen, including how to make all of the traditional ingredients, and how to open a restaurant. It wasn’t until he ended up in Kitsap that he put this knowledge to work.

The restaurant opened in April of 2021, with a bar expansion in June. Liz, the bar manager, also spent five years in Japan, and is thrilled to be able to create custom cocktails and bring Japanese ingredients to life in beautiful ways.  Johnson’s vision was to bring something to Kitsap that would fill a void for folks who have lived or spent time in Japan, a place for nostalgia and reminiscing, while also serving those interested in trying authentic dishes.

They are hoping to bring some of the “San Diego vibe” to Bremerton, to welcome families recently relocated to Kitsap with the arrival of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Future plans include a traditional-style karaoke lounge, available for private events. They offer gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. So, grab your friends and family for a great lunch or dinner.

They might recommend daily vitamin D supplements and a sun lamp . Sun lamps mimic natural light and can be effective for those with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Speak to your doctor before making any changes. Try boredom busters for kids Do you have kids who are starting to bounce off the walls or are (conversely) staying glued to their devices? Check out this list of fun boredom busters to break up the long days. Even a quick card or board game can put a spark of controlled energy into the room. There are also many local indoor play spaces to choose from in the area. There are play spaces for toddlers , indoor trampoline parks , laser tag venues , and arcades for teens. Lean into seasonal sports Enjoying a winter sport can mean everything from watching it live to watching it on TV to participating in it. Living so close to the Olympic Mountains and Mount Rainier means various options for skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoeing, and more. In addition, for those looking to watch sports live in the winter, Seattle is home to many professional teams, as well as minor league and college teams. If you prefer to stay off the roads and in the comfort of your own home, invite a couple of friends over to watch a game together. Start a new hobby For many, the rainy days provide a little more time since there’s often less running around. You can use that extra time to pick up a new hobby. Perhaps you’d like to get on the sourdough bread bandwagon, pick up woodworking, or learn how to knit. Maybe you’ve never made a mosaic but want to give it a try. Be sure to check them out. Choose an indoor home project to complete Meanwhile, if you feel stuck at home and don’t feel like picking up a new hobby, then why not tidy up your home a bit? Since this is the time of year when you may find yourself at home more, think about doing something that will make it feel more inviting. Purge old clothes, household items, and toys no longer being used. Pick a room to reorganize or rearrange the furniture. Hang up the pictures that you’ve been meaning to get to, or re-paint your home office. Tackling and completing a home improvement project will create a great sense of accomplishment. Take the time to slow down On the other hand, many take rainy days as an opportunity to embrace a slower lifestyle. That could mean spending the day reading a book or finding a new series to binge-watch without feeling guilty. Perhaps you let yourself enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in the morning for a longer amount of time. Or, since it’s dark outside, go to bed earlier or sleep in on the weekends. Some call it wintering and fully accept the conditions of this season while remaining home. Embrace Scandinavian Hygge Concepts Faced with even worse weather challenges in the winter than those in the Pacific Northwest, many Scandinavian countries still top the world happiness charts. Candles, warm blankets and a favorite mug for hot drinks are just the tip of the iceberg to creating a life of hygge. Plan a future trip Having something to look forward to can help pass the time during long rainy stretches. Think of an activity or trip that you’d like to do in the future and start planning. It could be an overnight trip or your weeklong summer vacation. It can be a camping trip, a day at the spa, or an upcoming concert. If all else fails, plan next year’s vacation to somewhere warm during this time to escape the cold days. It doesn’t matter where you go, or when you go, or for how long. Simply put something on the calendar you’re looking forward to and start making it happen. We know the rainy season isn't for everyone. Keep in mind that longer, sunnier days are on the horizon. In the meantime, take advantage of some of these ideas to make the next few weeks (and future winters) not just bearable but enjoyable.
